I saved on board HMS Hermione after she’d been in a major reefer and refitted with Sea Wolf. I remember going into refit in Chatham dockyard one of the last ships to ever be refitted there before they closed it as a fabulous ship with a fabulous crew I served in the on board that ship, and in the Persian Army patrol the precursor to the war great memories I made great friends something I will never forget as long as I live

It seems to me that what the Royal Navy needs now is another general purpose frigate that they can build cheap like the Leander class frigate but isn’t defenseless and putting a small gun on. It just seems a little bit stupid that being said 31 would be an ideal Leander class frigate of pissing about and building 32 all they really need to do is build more of these and just update them as they go along a much cheaper option since they already been done. I don’t understand why they’re only building. It seems nonsense to me, but the Navy has made some really really poor decisions in the last 40 years, not least of which was the power plant for the type 45 destroyers, and the aircraft carriers to be fair to down bigger we don’t need we could’ve built something a little bit smaller and then change their mind from putting traps on them. Just seems ridiculous. These aircraft are too damn expensive. We could buy something much cheaper which will do the same job.

Now who does not adore the Exocet missile? From Sheffield to Glamorgan, 220 miles between each location, the Exocet is loved. Even across the Atlantic, the Exocet has fans. 👏👏

Great film i have not seen before. I really enjoyed it. Shows just how much work and organization is necessary for flight operations from a carrier deck. I was 4 years old when this was filmed and i remember watching her on TV in 1980 when they took her to Cairnryan for scrap. I wonder if that footage still exists in the BBC archive?

I served on hms intrepid 86/89. She was a LPD We carried about 180 bootnecks. I can tell you it wasn't much fun as a 17 year old bosuns mate going into their mess decks ( barracks) to get them to sit in the shake book. Many a time a good 5ft back for the marines pit was called for, lol. Great times.

The new HMS Cardiff, a Type 26 frigate will be entering the fleet. Almost double the displacement but classified as a frigate, not estroyer as her Type 42 forebear. It is great to see the continuation of tradition and ships' names.

Some 30 years after this was made, I joined the RN as a seaman. The orders were even more formalised than this but it was largely the same, but we never just swapped the helmsman. We needed bridge permission to do that, and once a new helmsman took the wheel he reported to the bridge the course and speed, engine telegraph positions and revolutions, so that the bridge knew he had got it right. He also gave the bridge his rating and name so the OOW knew which crew member it was. We used an electronic intercom but the voice pipes were still there if needed. "Following the Lubber's Line" was really tricky during training but we got it eventually. There was a simple rule: If the course you want is to Port, then you steered to Port. If the course was to Starboard then you steered to Starboard. Eventually it became second nature.

I'm still trying to figure out what an Artificer is. I was in the US Navy; we didn't have a rating or a billet called Artificer. But I figured out the best Branch is the Artificer. 😁

Wonderful. My Father was in the Mighty 8th and was a POW in Germany. I never knew there was a position of an Artisfer! Very interesting!

32 years after it’s making, this assessment of RN capabilities is frighteningly acerbic and relevant. I would love to see a similarly forensic assessment of RN capability in 2024. I fear it would be a repeat of what we have seen in this production, that said we need to adjust our aspirations to our relevance in the world.

The Real strength behind the operations in Malaya was our good leadership- In our Battalion all majors and above had experience in WW2, some in Burma. Our CO had won the DSO in Normandy. The discipline was quite tight. For instance to 'make noise' in the jungle meant loss of pay... our strength was stealth and a very tight discipline of tactics and routine. I still remember vividly the routine for bash-up at night- it had 10 distinctive drills. No 1 sitting in a circle in silence- was to stop look and listen in complete silence for ten minutes ...the smokers among us would have the last smoke of the day, then the other nine drills followed before you got your head down.

When I was on my command course in Devonport I met a ex Petty officer who was on the HMNZS Southland a Leander class Frigate that was infamous for the wrong reasons. It entered Pearl Harbour and he said that they saw the Enterprise Aircraft carrrier with the banner.. We are second to none. The officer of the watch raided the flag of the day “Zero”. Funny he said when he was told to remove it.. I thought Americans had a sense of humour.

This film cannot possibly have all been filmed in 1975. The Lynx helicopter on the deck of the Type 42 was painted grey. Until April 1982, all Lynx were painted blue. It took the Falklands War to trigger a change of colour scheme. I know because it was Lt Phil Harrall and I who persuaded Flag Officer Naval Air Command to authorise it.

When training at HMS St Vincent in 65 I scored 100% in two exams. Knots and splices and steersmanship. In August that year I steered an anti submarine frigate for 1hr including full speed manoeuvres. All steering was done by Giro compass.

I was a royal navy stoker from the late 70's , first ship HMS Hermes...admiralty 3 drums...lots of memories...😊
